If you want a day off from the beach, then take a trip to Bridlington Animal Park. In addition to a whole host of animals, from armadillos to zebras and everything in between, the park has a play area for the kids, a picnic area, and woodland and parkland trails, making it the ideal destination for a family-friendly day out.
For something completely different, why not book a factory tour of John Bull's World of Rock? You'll get a fascinating insight into how rock is made, learn about the history of the Bull family, have a go at rock rolling yourself, find out how they get the letters inside the rock, and take a trip around a working factory. You can even make your own chocolate lolly or personalised stick of rock to take home with you.
Bridlington stands in some of the most beautiful surroundings you'll find anywhere, and if you want to make the most of the views and go wildlife and bird spotting at the same time, then pay a visit to RSPB Bempton Cliffs, which is home to more than half a million birds who gather between March and August to make their nests on the chalk cliffs overlooking the North Sea. Look out for puffins, guillemots, gannets and kittiwakes and on the adjoining grasslands, keep an eye out for corn buntings, skylarks, kestrels and owls. Five facts you never knew about Bridlington:
- It is the largest lobster port in Europe, with more than 300 tonnes being landed here each year;
- It is home to the largest chalk reef in Europe, Flamborough Head, which extends six kilometres into the North Sea between Filey and Bridlington;
- Britain's tallest man, measuring seven foot nine inches, was born near Bridlington in 1787 and was known as 'The Yorkshire Giant';
- It is believed that the English Civil War began close to Bridlington when it was decided to refuse Charles I's entry into Hull in 1642, which sparked a siege of the town, which is allegedly the first act of the war;
- The Humber Bridge, is situated close to Bridlington and spans 2,220 metres. It is the longest bridge in the UK, the second-longest bridge in Europe and the seventh-longest in the world!
