You can imagine spending a lot of time here on holiday soaking up the surrounding rural idyll, relaxing and enjoying being at one with nature. Thanks to its secluded location, the area benefits from dark skies at night, which makes it the perfect spot for stargazing.  

Places to visit during a Station House holiday 

Station House is the ideal base from which to explore the wonders of Cumbria and the Lake District. From the doorstep, there are a wealth of walks that offer an insight into the stunning flora and fauna of the area. 

The village of Cliburn is nearby, where you can stock up on essentials for your holiday with the towns of Penrith and Appleby a short drive away. Both these places are worth a visit in their own right with Penrith boasting an impressive selection of independent shops and eateries as well as Penrith Castle, Penrith and Eden Museum, St Andrew’s Church, Beacon Pike and the Musgrave Monument. Appleby is a picture-postcard pretty market town which is a must-visit.  

If you’re looking for family days out from Station House then Abbott Lodge is one for all to enjoy. This working dairy farm boasts more than 30 flavours of ice cream with at least 16 available at any one time and there are outdoor play areas and ride-on tractors for the children, so everyone is happy. The Puzzling Place in Keswick is a definite for kids of all ages to enjoy with optical illusions and interactive games and activities to fascinate and delight in equal measure. This is a great rainy day activity! 

For a taste of the history of the region, check out Lowther Castle and Gardens, where visitors can wander around the dramatic ruins of the castle and lose themselves in the vast gardens and Dalemain Mansion, which is a fine example of medieval, Tudor and Georgian architecture standing in award-winning grounds which form part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. 

To get active on your break, take a trip to Foxy’s Adventure Golf near Penrith and Happy Hooves Riding Centre, where you can soak up the beautiful scenery while enjoying a gentle trek.  

A great way to support an independent, local organisation and see some spectacular Cumbrian landscapes at the same time, is with a ride on the Eden Valley Railway.
