Caravan holidays in Whitby

Whitby

Everyone should go on a caravan holiday to Whitby at some point in their lives. In fact, it should be a rite of passage for any self-respecting Brit who claims to enjoy a good old-fashioned seaside holiday.

Why Book A Caravan Holiday In Whitby?

According to Time Out magazine, “Whitby is and always has been the perfect seaside getaway.” So, what’s all the fuss about? Along with its gorgeous Blue Flag beach, Whitby has traditional, bustling streets that offer a fantastic selection of independent shops, boutiques, and eateries. It is also known for its picturesque harbour and historic ruins. It is a great base from which to explore the wonders of North Yorkshire and beyond, with nearby towns such as Robin Hood’s Bay, Filey, Staithes, Runswick Bay, Pickering and Scarborough, all offering visitors a different but equally enchanting appeal.

The Whitby area has more beaches than you can shake a bucket and spade at (many of them dog-friendly all year round), so whether you want to build sandcastles, have a paddle, explore rock pools, go for a gentle stroll or have a go at all kinds of watersports, there is a beach to suit. Choose from beaches at Robin Hood’s Bay, Saltwick Bay, Sandsend or Port Mulgrave, to name just a few.

No trip to Whitby is complete without visiting Whitby Abbey, and these ruins provided inspiration for Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Take the Whitby 199 steps to the top, and you will be rewarded with the imposing sight of the abbey ruins, the Church of St Mary and breathtaking panoramic views. The influence of Dracula is everywhere in Whitby, and the town even has its own dedicated Dracula Experience, which is a must for any Gothic enthusiasts with Whitby’s Gothic Weekend, a bi-annual event since 1994, attracting the weird and wonderful to the town in their thousands.

Whitby’s rich and varied history doesn’t end there, with plenty of reference to its most famous son, Captain James Cook, who resided here during his apprenticeship. Check out the Captain Cook Memorial Museum, which is housed in the seventeenth-century building where he lived and offers a wealth of information on the man himself and his voyages of the Pacific, South Atlantic, and Arctic oceans.

Places to visit near Holiday Parks Whitby

You can enjoy a boat trip on an authentic replica of Captain Cook’s Endeavour, where you can learn more about what those voyages would have been like, and you might even learn a sea shanty or two!

A fabulous day out that combines the great outdoors with some fascinating art and history can be found at Pannett Park, a beautifully maintained public park in the heart of Whitby which has all kinds of spectacular gardens, including a commemorative garden, a lily pool, a community garden, a Jurassic-themed garden and a stunning South Seas garden. There is also a dedicated children’s play area, and visitors can take a number of trails around the park. On the grounds of Pannett Park, visitors will find Whitby Museum and Pannett Art Gallery, which are both well worth a visit. The award-winning Whitby Museum offers a fascinating insight into the history of the Whitby area with references to its Jurassic heritage and connection with the South Seas (which is also mirrored in the gardens). If you want to stop off for a break before resuming your tour, then pop into the tearoom for a refreshing cuppa and a bite to eat.

Continue your cultural adventure with a trip to Pannett Art Gallery, which houses works by the Staithes group of artists and the work of George Weatherill, as well as hosting exhibitions from local, national and international artists.

Your whistle-stop tour of Whitby is complete, so what are you waiting for? Book that break now, or you’ll miss out on the holiday of a lifetime…
