Places to Visit During a Caravan Holiday in Wells-Next-The-Sea
Pack your binoculars and a camera and take a trip to Cley Marshes Nature Reserve, which covers 430 acres of beach, marshland and reed beds, which support migrating wildfowl and waders as well as bittern, marsh harriers and bearded tits. During the summer, look out for avocets and spoonbills, and in winter, look for wigeon, pintails, and Brent geese.
If you’ve got a taste for twitching (birdwatching), then you must head to Holkham National Nature Reserve, which, at 9,000 acres, is England’s largest national nature reserve. There are so many (dog-friendly!) nature trails and paths where you can see birds such as snow bunting, shore larks, terns, avocets and marsh harriers.
Blakeney National Nature Reserve is also well worth a visit. Run by the National Trust, this 1,200-acre site incorporates salt marshes, creeks, tidal mud flats and reclaimed farmland and is the most important location in the UK for sandwich and little terns, as well as being home to oystercatchers, ringed plovers, common redshanks and reed warblers.
Other locations ideal for bird and wildlife watching include Titchwell Marsh, a 420-acre RSPB reserve which attracts rare breeding birds; Pensthorpe Natural Park, a 700-acre nature reserve; Norfolk Wildlife Trust’s Holme Dunes and the RSPB Reserve at Snettisham. For something a little more sedate and a great way to take in the sights and sounds of this captivating part of the world, take a trip on the Wells and Walsingham Light Railway. The journey from Wells-Next-The-Sea to Walsingham takes in some of the most enchanting Norfolk countryside along the way. The trains are dog-friendly, and there are family-friendly activities throughout the school holidays. You can’t go on a caravan holiday to Wells-Next-The-Sea and not have a day out at the beach. As well as Wells-Next-The-Sea itself, visit beaches at Holkham, Cley, Brancaster and Westbourne, all perfect for family picnics, building sandcastles, exploring rock pools, romantic strolls and having a go at all kinds of watersports.
