A hidden gem found in the north eastern corner of Essex, Mersea Island is an idyllic seven-square-mile island joined to the mainland by The Strood causeway.
Why Book A Caravan Holiday in Mersea Island
Booking a Mersea Island caravan holiday promises its visitors an unforgettable holiday, so make sure you get ready for the break of a lifetime! It might be small, but Mersea Island certainly delivers – in buckets and spades! With more beaches than you can shake a stick at, loads of family-friendly activities, dog-friendly walks, an abundance of nature and some of the most stunning views you’ll find anywhere, Mersea Island definitely ticks all the boxes. Something of a Mecca for keen walkers, a circular walk around the island is 13 miles in distance, so you can either pack a picnic and make a day of it, or if you’re a seasoned rambler, you can complete the walk in around three hours. Either way, you’ll be able to immerse yourself in some amazing panoramic views along the way. The chilled-out fishing village of West Mersea boasts a fantastic dog-friendly beach, which is the perfect location for a picnic and a paddle and a short walk from the beach, there is a great selection of independent shops, galleries and eateries, making it the ideal spot for relaxing and staying awhile. East Mersea is more rural and rewards visitors with some captivating views, so is well worth exploring, just don’t forget your camera!
Places TO Visit During West Mersea Caravan Holidays
Cudmore Grove Country Park is well worth a visit while you’re on a caravan holiday to Mersea Island and welcomes children and adults alike, as well as our furry friends. Whether you’re on foot, bicycle or horse, there are loads of trails and paths throughout the park, making it suitable for everyone. The park includes a gorgeous sandy beach as well as grassy meadows, where you will find all kinds of birds and wildlife, so much so that it has been earmarked as a Site of Special Scientific Interest, making it hugely popular with birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts. Check out the 15 types of wading birds found here, as well as birds of prey and other creatures, and on summer days, you can spot up to 15 different types of butterflies. The park also boasts some historical features worth keeping an eye out for, including World War II pill boxes, gun emplacements, the remains of a sixteenth-century blockhouse fort, and there is even a cliff where 300,000-year-old fossils have been found.
Along with West Mersea Beach, other beaches to discover in the area include Woodup Pool, a saltwater bathing pool with its own small beach, Brightlingsea (which has an open-air pool), and St Osyth. If you want a fun-filled, active day out for the whole family to enjoy, then take a short but rewarding trip to Wyvernwood, an enchanting kingdom where children (and adults!) can lose themselves in a world of imagination. Meet magical characters along the way, including Zephyr the dragon, make a wish with the fairies, scale the castle walls, concoct spells with a wizard and see scary goblins and mystical unicorns. Have a go on the dragon karts, crawl through goblin tunnels, make your way through the maze, build a den and have a jump on the fabulous jumping pillow. There is so much to see and do at Wyvernwood. It really is a memorable day out, and it is one sure to tire out even the most active kids! If you’ve never been to Mersea Island on a caravan holiday before, then you’re in for a treat, and once you’ve discovered its delights, you’ll already be planning your return visit.
