National
Railway Museum
A fantastic indoor venue, which is also an amazing free place to go, is the National Railway Museum in York, which showcases the genius of engineering and celebrates the past, present, and future of our trains.
There are interactive activities, virtual reality experiences, workshops, and talks to help engage children (and adults!) with the area’s locomotive history. Why not arrive in style by taking the road train from York Minster to the museum?
Other family attractions in the area include:
Historical Places of Interest:
Home to the Howard family for more than 300 years, Castle Howard and Gardens is a fascinating day out for the whole family.
The castle boasts some world-renowned architecture and the interior is awe-inspiring.
Check out the Great Hall, which measures 70 feet in height.
Step outside and wander around the beautiful (dog-friendly) gardens and grounds, which are full of delights at every turn, from manicured gardens, woodland paths, calm lakes, and traditional statues and contemporary sculptures.
For the children, there is Skelf Island Adventure Playground, and there is a café and garden centre, too.
Historic Buildings in North Yorkshire
For a history lesson in one go, visit Fountains Abbey in Ripon, North Yorkshire.
This UNESCO World Heritage Site is home to possibly the best-preserved ruins of a Cistercian monastery you’ll find anywhere.
It is also located next to Studley Royal Water Gardens, one of the finest examples of a Georgian water garden, complete with ornamental lakes, canals, temples, and waterfalls.
There is also a deer park here at Studley Royal Deer Park where more than 300 deer live, so you’re sure to catch a glimpse, and to top it all off, make sure you take a look at St Mary’s Church, a dramatic Victorian gothic church.
